Peter is a Chemical Engineer from Imperial College, a Chartered Systems Engineer, has an MBA from London Business School, subscribes to the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Chartered Institute of Personal Development, has several qualifications in psychology and executive coaching and is a fully accredited member and main board director of the Institute for Turnaround. Peter uses his interest in etymology (origins of words and phrases) of the English language in his work with clients in several ways including to add some relaxation and as a reminder that there is always a reason for any outcome – whether that is a successful meeting or the hidden meaning of a word or phrase.
For example when Lloyds of London would only insure wooden ships if they covered their hull below the waterline with metal plates to resist barnacles.
Hence the phrase “Copper bottomed guarantee”.
Similarly words like “bankrupt”, “retail”, “maverick” and many more all have fascinating and revealing origins with useful lessons for executives in modern business.
